Sam Brukhman found Keri Mitchell through a story she published in 2019. They built a friendship from their shared love of impactful storytelling — she with narrative words and strong data, he with commissioned music and lyrics set to interactive elements — and pledged to find a way to tell stories together. That dream culminated in 2024 with "Mis-Lead: A West Dallas Story of Resilience." Brukhman, inspired by a piece Dallas Free Press published on the history of environmental injustice that continues to plague the community, commissioned an original work to tell the story through song and film, in English and Spanish. The result was a composition that allowed West Dallas neighbors to feel seen and listened to in powerful new ways, and compelled people who have lived in Dallas for years — even their entire lives — to open themselves up to a story that had somehow eluded them and ask, "Why didn't I know this?" and "What can I do?" In this session, Keri and Sam will explore how this unique collaboration came together, what they learned, and how they hope to work together again for the good of the West Dallas community. https://www.verdigrismusic.org/mislead https://dallasfreepress.com/west-dallas/verdigris-tells-the-story-of-west-dallas-environmental-injustice-resilience-in-mis-lead/ https://www.keranews.org/arts-culture/2024-04-01/verdigris-ensemble-tackles-west-dallas-lead-infused-past-in-new-multimedia-production https://www.dmagazine.com/frontburner/2024/04/how-a-choral-ensemble-will-tell-the-story-of-west-dallas/
