This talk is not only about how to make breakthrough journalism happen, but how we can ensure it has the greatest opportunity to inspire civic action that drives real-world change. Flora Pereira will share her experience at the Pulitzer Center in investing in journalism’s future by experimenting with new approaches to audience engagement and building a theory of change to advance practices that expand journalism’s reach and impact on society. This talk hopes to shed light on solutions to face the communication crisis we face. As news consumption continues to fragment, surveys show increased feelings of news overload, and we witness a decline in general and media literacy - and in audiences, the talk will highlight experiences in creating communities of learning that amplify a story's impact beyond publication through education and outreach programs, connecting teachers, students, artists, influencers, and decision makers with stories that matter. A new idea of journalism beyond publishing, but that will focus on planning, creating dialogue, fostering learning, and sparking civic action.
