In this era of mis- and disinformation, a decline of trust in public institutions, and the vital need for truth and transparency, the mandate for journalism to connect with communities presents us with a vibrant and exciting opportunity. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has a history of innovation in this space, hiring British journalism’s first ever community organiser in 2017. Now with the recent Trans+ Voices project and Bradford Storyhub, that development continues. In Glasgow, Greater Govanhill has been working since 2020 to bring people together in their community, providing a space to learn new skills and share resources through a magazine, community newsroom, and much more. From that, Greater Community Media has grown to support more people to build healthier media ecosystems by developing sustainable community-centred media.
