Most people know that humans are expanding past Earth’s boundaries with technologies such as orbiting satellites, space probes, and robotic rovers on nearby planetary bodies. But did you know that our radio technology has been leaking into the cosmos for generations? In the cosmic realm, human technology is theoretically detectable, and our cosmically loudest activities are not only fundamentally technological but also inextricably embedded in unsustainable practices. Sustainability puzzles surrounding AI (Artificial Intelligence) arising at the terrestrial level have extraterrestrial counterparts, and we are already reproducing demonstrably unsustainable dynamics in low Earth orbit and beyond. In the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), astronomers and other scientists look for evidence of alien technology, but this search has increasingly become a search for evidence of unsustainable extraterrestrial technologies. Because aspects of SETI searches often reflect directly back onto ourselves and our planet, we can use this opportunity for cosmic reflection to consider not only whom we hope to find in the universe, but also how we as a detectable species ought to exist in the universe. This exercise can stoke new imaginations of human technologies and futures, and it can even potentially inform the question of whether we are alone in the cosmos.
