How can independent local journalism survive when advertising markets collapse, teams shrink and donor funding becomes increasingly uncertain? Drawing on MDF’s experience supporting more than 86 Ukrainian local media outlets, this talk looks at the realities of journalism in frontline and de-occupied communities and explores a new approach: building sustainability through direct community support. The 1,000 Fans for Ukrainian Media initiative asks whether a relatively small number of committed supporters can help give local journalism a more stable and independent financial foundation.
