Sophia Maier is a trained scholar of democracy studies as well as a journalist and war correspondent. Her documentary work focuses on crisis and war zones such as Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Syria. She also regularly reports on demonstrations in Germany, with a focus on the AfD, the New Right, and right-wing extremism. Sophia has received numerous awards for her documentaries. In her first book, Heart of Barbed Wire – A War Correspondent on Lost Humanity and the Double Standards of the West , she paints a powerful and unvarnished picture of war and displacement—intimate, raw, and moving. The book is not only a critical assessment of the West’s role but also a plea for greater humanity—a call to bear witness and take responsibility.
