Fact-checking to safeguard democracy has become a corner-stone of journalism in the digital era. Yet few journalists understand why false information often lands on fertile ground with an audience. Even fewer realise where they may fuel societal conflicts in areas like climate action, migration or AI. The rise and fall of climate journalism holds lessons as societal frictions caused by climate policies and climate change itself increasingly dominate debates and coverage.
